St. Mark's Announcements Week of Feb. 22-28, 2010

*Welcome to St. Mark’s Church. We are glad you are here. Breakfast is served after the 8:00am service. Coffee and lemonade are served following the 10:30 service. Please join us and take the time to make yourself known to us. There are many ways to become involved at St. Mark’s and we would be delighted to talk to you about your interest. Please speak to the clergy as you are leaving or contact the church office at 704.864.4531, ext. 1.

St. Mark’s offers nursery facilities for ages 3 and under in first floor rooms off the Parish Hall. The nursery is staffed by members of the congregation from 9:00 through the end of the 10:30 service. Children are welcome in the nursery during any portion of the service or Christian education time.

Children’s bulletins and quiet activity bags with crayons and paper are available from an usher or in the basket at the entrance to the church for children to use during the service. Art work belongs to the artist; please return the rest of the bag to the basket.

An age-appropriate Children’s Chapel is offered for those 7 and younger during the Liturgy of the Word portion of the 10:30 service. We leave before the readings and return at the peace.

“ ON BEING AN EPISCOPALIAN 101”

Have you noticed the Episcopal flag attached to the choir pew on the right side of the sanctuary?  Adopted by General Convention in 1940 the flag with the corresponding shield is the official symbol of our denomination. A red cross on a white field is an ancient symbol, white for the purity of Christ and red for His sacrifice on the cross and the blood of the martyrs. A red cross is also the cross of St. George, patron saint of England, from which our church descended. The blue field in the upper left is the color traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary and symbolizes Jesus’ humanity. The x-shaped cross in the blue is the cross of St. Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, and recalls our indebtedness to the Scottish Episcopal Church for the 1784 consecration of our first bishop, Samuel Seabury. The cross is made up of 9 smaller crosslets which represent the original 9 dioceses (Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware) which met in 1789 in Philadelphia to adopt the constitution of the Episcopal Church.

THE CRANMER CUP 2010

CHEROKEE COUNTRY CLUB - KNOXVILLE, TENN.

In 2000, at the invitation of several British (Church of England) Clergy, a group of American Episcopal Clergy went to England for a three-day, Ryder Cup style golf match. Using a handicap system fair to all, the Americans won hands down! The American team then invited the British players to the US for a rematch two years hence. Competitions have continued every two years and now involve 14 clergy from England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, and 14 American Clergy from all over the Eastern US. This year our host will beThe Very Rev. John Ross, and the people of St. John’s Cathedral, Knoxville, TN.

This year we will gather at the Cherokee Country Club, Knoxville, as guests of Dean Ross. The competition will be held April 25-30, 2010, and will include a practice round, two days of 36 holes each of various formats, and final round of match play involving all 28 players, and a grand banquet.

We are looking for interested individuals and corporations to assist us with providing a pleasant experience for our British friends. Each of us pays for our own golf and travel as much as possible. There are some cases, however, where assistance is helpful. The concluding banquet and awards ceremony is a good example.

Please consider helping us in the following way; send a check for an amount of your choosing: St .John’s Cathedral, PO Box 135, Knoxville, TN 37901. Designate to “Cranmer Cup” and Attn. Sheila Atkins or to: The Rev. Shawn Griffith, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Designate to “Cranmer Cup”. Thank you for considering sponsorship of this important international event!
